Open Question: How can I deal with my huge gay crush?
I’m a sophomore in high school (15), gay, and out. I’m not (what my peers would call) “a flamer,” and most people think I’m a laid-back straight guy until I they find out otherwise. I’m fine socially—gays aren’t outcasts where I live—with friends who are comfortable with me as I am.
I’m in theater after school, and there’s an *incredibly* attractive gay guy in our cast. Here’s the thing, though: we became kinda-friends before he even knew I was gay. I’m also friends with a lot of his friends. This made things a little awkward. He’s a senior, 17, and has had (that I know) one boyfriend (who moved to Oklahoma last year). I know him pretty well (he’s been in the company for 4 years, me for 2), but we don’t have any classes together, so I only see him during lunch and after school.
I don’t know what made this year so different from the last, but I fell for him. Hard. He’s been on my mind since August. This crush isn’t going away any time soon—I’ve got the daydreaming, sappy music, the whole shebang. It’s like something out of those shitty, cheap romance novels.
I’ve never dated guys before (there’s slim pickings at my high school), and I don’t want to ruin any friendships. I really, really would like to pursue this, but I’m—honestly—scared, of rejection, of looking and feeling like a fool before this is over. What can I do?
He also—I forgot to mention this—has a twin brother, who he’s close to (and is also in theater). It’s hard to get to him alone, at least during the times I see him.
Some things:
1) Everyone knows he’s gay. Many people (and everyone in theater) knows I’m gay. We’re the only gay guys in theater I know of.
2) I’m an atheist; “you will go to hell” isn’t helpful and doesn’t scare me.
3) How the hell do you ask someone out? I’m *that* new to this
